When I reflect on the work we are doing through the Gilbert Kimeng Teaching Ministry, my heart is continually drawn back to the words of the Apostle Paul in Acts 15:36:

"Let us go back and visit the believers in all the towns where we preached the word of the Lord and see how they are doing."

This simple yet profound scripture is the heartbeat of our mission. Our goal is to strengthen churches across Africa and beyond, with a very special focus on smaller and less-visited congregations.

We are deeply committed to encouraging, teaching, and walking alongside these communities of faith. By God’s grace, over the past few years, I have had the privilege of visiting approximately 50 churches across nearly 30 African countries.

Many of these beautiful congregations rarely receive any visitors. Because of these visits, we have found that simply showing up brings a profound spiritual encouragement, especially to those smaller churches that can so easily feel overlooked or isolated.

Through Bible-based formation, our ministry empowers these brothers and sisters to value spiritual depth, often over their numbers or size. Our focus is to help them become more like Jesus, allowing the light of Christ inside of them to attract others and deeply impact their neighbours naturally.

None of these would be possible without the faithful support of partners like you. Through your prayers, your encouragement, and your financial giving, thousands of believers have been strengthened, and entire families of churches have been nourished by the teaching of God’s Word.

Africa Teacher’s Group - Good News!

We are excited to share some uplifting news from the Africa Teachers’ Group (ATG). Recently, we had the pleasure of welcoming Simon Muia, a dedicated teacher from the Nairobi Church in Kenya. His commitment to God and His Word exemplifies the spirit of love and service that drives our mission.

A Growing Legacy

From August 2018 to August 2019, a remarkable total of 15 brothers were recognised as Bible teachers within the five geographic families of churches of the ICOC Africa Missions. This period marked a significant step toward enhancing biblical education across the continent.

In the months that followed, fueled by friendship, love, and mutual respect, these brothers recognised the need for collaboration. Their vision was clear: to create a robust spiritual network that would strengthen not just individual nations but the entire continent. This passion for unity and growth led to the establishment of both the Africa Teachers Group (ATG) and the Africa Teachers Service Team (ATST) in the first quarter of 2020.

Inspiring Journey

In June 2025, Simon joined several teachers across Africa in a transformative Bible Study Tour to the Ancient Sites of the Seven Churches, as described in the book of Revelation. This experience enriched his personal faith, deepened camaraderie with fellow Bible teachers, and provided him with invaluable insights that he brings back to his Nairobi community and beyond.

God's Work Across the Continent

We are witnessing God’s incredible work within the East African Family of Churches and beyond. More individuals are stepping up to foster biblical literacy and sound teaching, helping to strengthen our communities and deepen our collective faith. The vision that sparked the creation of ATG is clearly being realised, and we are grateful for every contribution made by our dedicated teachers.

As we celebrate these milestones, we encourage everyone to continue supporting one another in this important ministry. Together, we can make a lasting impact on the future of our churches and communities across Africa.

ICOC Ghana Women’s Retreat 2025

“Be Strong in the Lord”

From September 19th to 21st, 2025, the Women’s Ministry of the International Churches of Christ (ICOC) Ghana hosted an inspiring three-day retreat themed “Be Strong in the Lord”. Held in the culturally rich town of Ejisu in the Ashanti Region, the retreat brought together nearly 90 women from across Ghana, including Accra, Cape Coast, Takoradi, and Koforidua, for a time of spiritual renewal, fellowship, and cultural celebration.

A Gathering of Faith and Fellowship

The retreat kicked off on Friday evening at the NTK Luxury Apartments in Ejisu, a town renowned for its history as the hometown of Yaa Asantewaa I, the legendary Queen Mother who led the Ashanti resistance against British colonial rule. Participants were warmly welcomed with singing, dancing, and praise-setting a joyful tone for the weekend ahead.

Faustina Buah, Women’s Leader of the Kumasi church, welcomed the sisters with heartfelt words, emphasizing the importance of strength in faith and unity. The evening was crowned with a traditional Ashanti Adowa dance performance during dinner, highlighting the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Day 1: Spiritual Foundations and Cultural Appreciation

Saturday began with an energetic aerobics session to invigorate the women for the day’s activities. The morning sessions focused on cultivating spiritual strength:

Spiritual Values : Led by Mavis Dwumor and Joyce Azumah, this teaching emphasized standing firm in faith, protecting the heart, trusting God, and remaining rooted in His Word. Biblical stories like that of Mary and Martha helped participants find balance in their lives as Christian women.
Panel Discussion : Women representing different life stages-married, single, and youth-engaged in an insightful dialogue, answering questions from the audience and sharing practical advice on navigating faith and life.

The afternoon featured classes on “Professional Values,” delivered by Yayra Ashong Mettle and Beatrice Agyapomaa. They emphasized integrity, accountability, and striving for excellence in secular careers, encouraging women to live godly lives in their workplaces.

The day concluded with a powerful evening of thanksgiving, testimonies, prayers, and praise, with sisters dressed in white sharing how God had worked in their lives.

Day 2: Strengthening Women for Life and Work

Sunday’s worship service centered on the theme “Be Strong in the Lord,” delivered by Paule Dasse and Paule Buah. They encouraged women to trust in God’s power, especially during life’s challenges, sharing personal stories and biblical encouragement.

Young women, Anna Dasse and Valerie Mensah Kwao, also shared inspiring testimonies about their evangelism efforts on university campuses, reminding everyone of the importance of youth involvement in God’s work.

The day’s highlight was the special recognition of Buah’s leadership and hospitality. In a touching moment, her daughter, Bertha Dasoberi, surprised her with a birthday cake, celebrating her dedication and service.

Cultural and Historical Exploration

After the worship service, participants enjoyed a sightseeing tour of Kumasi, including a visit to the historic Manhyia Palace-home to the Asantehene, the traditional King of the Ashanti people. The palace, now a museum, offered a fascinating glimpse into Ashanti history and culture, enriching the spiritual experience with cultural appreciation.

Celebrating Community and Looking Forward

The retreat concluded with a lively dinner and fellowship, where sisters bonded over food, dancing, and shared reflections. It was a bittersweet moment as everyone prepared to return home, inspired and renewed in their faith.

ICOC Warri Celebrates 30th Anniversary

with Cultural Splendor and Spiritual Reflection

The International Church of Christ Warri marked its 30th anniversary with a celebration of cultural displays, recognitions, and spiritual messages. The event brought together past and present church leaders, members, and friends from Nigeria and abroad.

A key moment was the presentation of plaques honoring two late leaders: Dr. Emmanuel Urhobo, who first led the church from his home, and evangelist Wole Adegbola, who served alongside Angela Ige from 1997 to 1998. Other past leaders—including Bola and Bola Shoboyejo, Jide and Biola Ojo, Wasiu and Martina Ajao, John and Margaret Obaje, and Olaolu and Abiodun Karunwi—were also recognized. Lead Evangelist Jide Ojo, who delivered the sermon, shared his experiences leading the church through the Warri ethnic crisis. His message, titled “Through His Might” (Isaiah 40:29), highlighted faith and resilience, stressing that the church’s strength came from God.

The program featured cultural dances and dramas representing the Urhobo, Ijaw, Itsekiri, and Anioma peoples. Children from the Kids’ Kingdom (ages 3–12) performed to the gospel song, No Going Back.

The celebration coincided with the 80th birthday of Mama Mary Chibuogwu and was marked with food and family-style hospitality. The event also reconnected many former members who had left in the past two decades, drawing an estimated 400 attendees. Extra chairs were set outside to accommodate the overflow.

During the event, Kemi Olufowobi announced the transfer of current leaders, Olaolu and Biodun Karunwi, back to Lagos, signaling a leadership transition.

The success of the anniversary was credited to the planning committee, volunteers, and support from members and friends. The church looks ahead with hope for continued growth in Warri and across Delta State, giving thanks to God for the milestone.

A Spirit-Filled Season

Across Cameroon and Côte d’Ivoire in French Speaking Africa

The past weeks have been one of the most faith-building and inspiring times in my travelling teaching ministry. From the biennial conference in Yaoundé, Cameroon, to the 35th Anniversary of the Abidjan Church in Côte d’Ivoire, God’s Spirit was at work in powerful ways.

Yaoundé, Cameroon

The conference gathered leaders and disciples from 19 churches across 6 nations under the theme “I Press On Toward the Goal.” Delegates traveled for two to four days by road to attend, yet their joy and faith overshadowed every hardship.

A sister from Chad expressed her determination to be present, while another from Bamenda marveled at the fellowship, asking, “Are all of these brothers and sisters part of the delegation in Congo, Brazzaville?” These testimonies underscored the investment and impact of the gathering.

The fellowship times between lessons was a reminder of the deep family bond in Christ. Relationships were renewed, and new friendships were formed, strengthening the region’s unity.

Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

Immediately following the conference, disciples gathered in Abidjan for the church’s 35th Anniversary. Twenty-five churches from 8 nations were represented, and the worship was marked by joy, color, and unity.

The church celebrated the growth from its 1989 planting by 21 missionaries to over 6,000 disciples in 44 churches across 14 nations in French-Speaking Africa today. A sister from Burkina Faso described it simply: “Le Royaume est doux”-“The Kingdom is sweet.”

One of the themes, “From Memory to Mission,” was evident in the zeal of the youth, the steadfastness of families, and the encouragement from older disciples. Worship filled the air, and the international fellowship created a glimpse of heaven itself.

Moving Forward

Reflecting on these gatherings, one question stands out: If God accomplished so much with 21 missionaries, what will He do with 6,000 disciples?

I returned home filled with gratitude, conviction, and renewed faith. God’s story is still unfolding, and He calls us to continue pressing on-toward Christ, toward mission, and toward the nations.

Remembering God's Work: A Story Worth Passing On

A few years ago, I traveled to Abidjan on a teaching and encouragement trip. While there, I began documenting the history of the mission to French-speaking Africa—starting with the planting of the Abidjan Church.

Now, as the Abidjan Church marks its 35th anniversary, it feels especially timely to share one of the interviews I conducted during that visit. In this interview, a member of the original mission team reflects on the early days of the church. This conversation is offered in the spirit of Psalm 78, which reminds us of the sacred responsibility to pass on the story of God’s work to future generations:

“We will not hide them from their descendants; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, His power, and the wonders He has done…”

—Psalm 78:4

This psalm underscores the vital importance of remembering and recounting God's faithfulness—so that each new generation may grow in trust, remain rooted in His word, and continue to walk in obedience.

Sharing these stories is not only an act of gratitude and worship—it is a foundation for generational faith. When we fail to pass them on, the result can be spiritual drift, disobedience, and a break in our legacy of faith.

So, as we celebrate 35 years of God’s incredible work in Abidjan, let us pause to reflect, give thanks, and commit ourselves anew to telling His story—faithfully, boldly, and often.

GROWTH IN BIBLICAL LITERACY

ACROSS AFRICAN CHURCHES

While the Church in Africa has witnessed remarkable numerical growth, it has often struggled with

depth—both biblically and spiritually. Thankfully, that is changing. More and more African believers are

pursuing rigorous theological and biblical studies, laying a foundation for mature, healthy congregations.

In just ten years, the Mountain Theological Seminary (formerly the Rocky Mountain School of Ministry

and Theology) has enrolled over 60 African students in programs ranging from a Masters of Arts in

Biblical Studies (with or without Languages), Christian Ministry, Christian Counselling to other

specialized Certificate Courses. To date, 16 students from Eastern (5), English West (6), French West (2)

and Southern (3) Africa have graduated with 22 actively engaged in coursework.

This thirst for deeper study is already bearing fruit: congregations—especially those established for

twenty or thirty years—are experiencing richer, more substantive teaching. As our older churches mark

three decades or more of ministry, the demand for mature, theologically grounded content has only

intensified.

For example, as the Abidjan Church prepares to celebrate its 35th anniversary this July, a cadre of

distinguished African teachers will lead a week of seminars on issues vital to the African context:

witchcraft and magic, the role of women, marriage & divorce. Each topic will be carefully contextualized

to reflect the continent’s diverse cultures and realities.

The African Teachers Group has dedicated itself to developing curriculum that speaks directly to regional

realities—ensuring that doctrine remains both faithful and relevant.

One challenge many prospective students still face is tuition cost. It is our prayer that, as more African

Christians recognize the value of advanced study, financial barriers will fall away—empowering a new

generation of leaders equipped with the biblical tools and global perspective needed to build vibrant,

healthy churches across Africa.

French West Africa Celebrate 35 years of Mission

The Abidjan Church of Christ will celebrate their 35th anniversary by hosting a French West-African regional conference and a special worship servic e from July 29 to August 3, 2025.

Members from across the region and beyond will gather in Abidjan for a week of fellowship, leadership training, teaching, and celebration.

In October 1989, a missionary team from the United States and Europe arrived in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to plant a new mission of the International Churches of Christ. Now, 35 years later, that work has grown into a flourishing network of churches spread across French-speaking West and Central Africa. These include vibrant church families in Cameroon, Congo Kinshasa, Congo Brazzaville, Chad, Gabon, Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Togo, Benin, Niger, and Liberia.

The upcoming conference is being organized by the West French Africa family of churches, and it also serves as a belated celebration of Abidjan’s 35th year—officially reached in 2024, but postponed to 2025 to allow for broader participation and better planning.

Delegates from the United States, France, Nigeria, South Africa, Madagascar, Congo, and other nations are expected to attend.

July 29–31: Church Leaders’ Conference
August 1: Opening ceremony for all disciples
August 2: Ministry class tracks for singles, marrieds, youth & family, and teens
August 3: 35th anniversary celebration worship service

The New York Staff and French Speaking Africa

The online session which held a few weeks ago was truly uplifting and inspiring. Spearheaded by Deysi Oguagha, it brought together leaders from two families of churches in French-speaking Africa and the staff of the New York Church in a meaningful time of connection and fellowship.

Having played a pivotal role in planting churches across Africa from the late 1980s to the early 1990s, the New York Church continues to be deeply involved in supporting the growth and vitality of churches in French-speaking Africa.

Tom and Belinda, representatives of the Africa Missions Association, shared updates on the New York Church’s ongoing financial contributions—which range from support for church staff to educational initiatives through Chance for Africa , medical assistance, and much more.

A striking insight from Belinda highlighted that French-speaking Africa is the largest Francophone region in the world, presenting a unique opportunity for disciples who studied French in high school or college to visit, serve, and connect more deeply with this mission field.

Moses and Honorine Kalala, who lead the church in Kinshasa (DRC), joined the session with their staff to share powerful updates from 19 churches across 6 countries in Central Africa. Their story of perseverance and fruitfulness over the past 10 years in fulfilling the Great Commission was truly inspiring.

From French-speaking West Africa, Emmanuel and Agnes Koffi shared alongside Abidjan church administrator Michael Koutouan, campus ministry leader Desire Kouassi, and PhD/School of Missions student Jean Noel. They spoke of a thriving region that spans 8 countries, with 25 established churches and dozens of emerging seed fellowships.

A key highlight was the upcoming 35th Anniversary Celebration of the Abidjan Church, scheduled for July 28 – August 3, 2025. This milestone event is expected to unite disciples from across Africa and around the world in a powerful celebration of God’s faithfulness.

The New York Church staff was deeply encouraged to see the long-term fruit of their investment and the depth of relationships forged over more than three decades.

A key outcome of this meeting was a renewed commitment to strengthen this invaluable partnership through in-person visits, online sessions, shared services, and collaborative mission efforts.

This session was held in anticipation of the New York City Missions Collection, which will continue to fuel the transformative work taking place across French-speaking Africa.

Thanksgiving, Eldership, Graduation & Baptism

The Lagos Church’s January 28 Thanksgiving Service was richly centered on celebrating God's goodness through praises, thanksgiving and proclaiming the greatness and beauty of God! The day was filled with worship and incredible fellowship.

In his New Year’s Message titled "The Certainty of Heaven", the Lead Evangelist of the Lagos Church, Jide Ojo encouraged the church and stated that the purpose of the sermon is to affirm and instill within each and every one of us an unshakable belief in the certainty of Heaven -- we should be reassured that despite the uncertainties of this world, we have an unshakable assurance in the promise of Heaven.

They later witnessed the Appointment of the 5th Elder in the Lagos church, Jude Ordu of the Oshodi-Isolo Region, and then celebrated the graduation of Four Students from the NEOSOM School of Missions, West Africa.

The Thanksgiving Service ended in jubilations as two lovely sisters were baptized and added to our numbers!

What a Service and what a way to start off the New Year!

Board & Committee Members Discuss Hopes, Dreams & Ambitions for Africa

In October, the Africa Missions Association joined together in Cincinnati, Ohio for their annual board meeting. Since the beginning of its formation, the AMA's mission has been to help fund our African brothers and sisters so that they can grow communities of devoted Christians within walking distance of every African. Over the course of three spirit-filled days, the board and it's different committees discussed an array of topics on how to accomplish just that.

Among the group were current African ministry leaders, Moses and Honorine Kalala of the Kinshasa Church of Christ (Democratic Republic of the Congo), as well as travelling evangelist and teacher, Gilbert Kimeng (Lagos, Nigeria).

The time was filled with zealous lessons, humbling conversations and God-inspired goals for next year and the years to come.

As a traveling teacher and multi-linguist, it’s a joy for Gilbert to serve communities across Africa, Europe and the US! Gilbert takes the teaching of God's word to new frontiers and remote places!

About Gilbert:

Gilbert Kimeng was baptized on October 1, 1992. He has been married to Perita for 9 years, with a 3 years old son and was appointed a teacher in the International Church of Christ (ICOC) on August 19, 2018. In the course of his years serving on the Church staff, he was appointed an evangelist in 2003 and served in various capacities.

Education:

Gilbert was an undergraduate student of engineering at the Technical University in Berlin Germany when he became a disciple of Jesus. He subsequently returned to the African continent to serve on the church staff from 1994 – 2007. After 13 years on staff, Gilbert returned to school and earned a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations from the Irish University Business school. He has worked in the ICT and Telecom Industry in different managerial roles and is currently undergoing a Masters of Arts Degree in Biblical Studies with the Rocky Mountain School of Ministry. During these years he has continued to serve, working with teenagers, singles and currently with the professional ministry in the Islands Region of the Lagos Church.

Professional Passions & Engagements:

Gilbert speaks three International languages, he has a passion for learning and has embarked on several Bible Study tours to Europe and Israel. He has taught extensively across the French and English speaking churches in West, Central, South and East Africa, partnering with them especially to teach Ministry Training Academy (MTA) courses and other congregational topics. His preferred areas of teaching include Christ & Culture, Apologetics and applying the principles of Hermeneutics and Exegesis to entire books, preferably in the New Testament.

Akoupé Small Village Mission

A "Missionary Volunteering" initiative that reached a small village and saved souls!

An amazing event happened in the Abidjan church in August, 2021! Zagouta and his wife Viviane are Evangelist in the South région in Abidjan. They sent another couple who are not in the Full Time in a very small village called Akoupé to plant a church! Rodolfo and Olivia now lead the Akoupé mission. It's not an official planted church, but they initiated an incredible activity called "Bénévolat missionnaire", or "Missionary Volunteering". During two months, they invited disciples everywhere to come when they have spare time to serve God. So many disciples came during their free time when they were in Akoupé, as well as many others coming from different towns to help. They spent their time studying bible with people, preaching the Gospel, singing in the streets, visiting those who are sick in hospital, collecting and sharing clothes and food with population. A the end of that program, 4 persons were baptized! Thank you God for saving souls in Akoupé!

An incredible victory for the Deaf Ministry in Bujumbura!

Janvier studied the bible with the two deaf brothers via WhatsApp. They live in two different provinces far from Bujumbura. They then came to Bujumbura to count the cost with other leaders and then they were baptized on 9th August 2021. The tall one is brother Manasseh and the other is Mustafa. Mustafa is from a Muslim family and facing challenges as a result of changing his faith to Christ. Manasseh is in a deaf boarding school. They are both doing well and excited to be disciples.

Kasese Mission

Our Heavenly Father works in powerful and unexpected ways.

In 2004 Muhindo Paul, received his first Bible. He started searching for the Truth and was on a journey to seek and understand the scriptures and the life God was calling him to. He found and became part of a Church in Kasese, Uganda. During his instruction, Muhindo Paul learned God's word and passionately started to evangelize throughout Uganda and the bordering towns in the Congo and Rwanda. He continued his quest to study and preach the gospel.

In 2016 Muhindo started praying to find the Kingdom of God. Through his study of the scriptures, he realized the fellowship he was a part of was not teaching and practicing all that the scriptures taught and were doctrinally incorrect. Muhindo started a congregation in Kasese, and in some of the villages, he evangelized with the members totaling 60 adults and 40 children.

In April 2020, Muhindo persistently reached out through an internet Facebook connection to Mark Harmon. Mark is a member of the Caledonia Church of Christ in Galion, Ohio. Mark started doing online Bible studies with Muhindo. He then became connected with Johnson Namei, the leader of the Kampala ICOC church, and Richard Ahenda, the leader of several East African ICOC churches. God heard Muhindo's prayers and connected him to men who would help him learn the scriptures and get connected to the Kingdom of God.

"What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe as the Lord assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow" (1 Corinthians 3:5-6)

Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body. So it is with Christ. (1 Corinthians 12:12)

Gods' orchestration and plan used many servants in His Kingdom to do their part and work together, and God would make it grow. In January of 2018, Tracey Camier, a disciple in the DFW Church, created a vision board. As God placed it on her heart to start praying for Africa, she had a vision to serve with her family there one day. In January 2021, she shared this vision with her Bible Talk. Within days Tracey saw a post on the ICOC Facebook page with photos of flooding in rural areas of Kasese Uganda, affecting children and those in need. Tracey and her husband Jacques reached out to Juliet Nyongoma and her husband, Muhindo Paul. They needed resources and support to help the poor and needy affected by the flood and the pandemic. Jacques began to study the Bible with Muhindo and some of his church members over Google Meet. Tracey and Jacques built a close friendship with Muhindo and Juliet and were in contact almost daily. They spent much time praying and petitioning God for the specific requests of poor families and children in need in their community. They also prayed that they would meet with the brothers and Sisters in the Ugandan ICOC Churches.

Meanwhile, in February 2021, our Sister Dolores Tilton, a Pediatric Nurse from the Chicago Church of Christ, was intrigued by a Facebook post of a cute little boy holding a big Bible. Dolores started a conversation with Juliet. She found out about the many needs of poor and orphaned children in Kasese and was inspired to fundraise for these children. In Mid-March, Dolores and her husband, Todd, prayed and wrote a letter that Muhindo delivered to the Disciples of the Kampala Church, connecting them with Martin Mpanga, a director working with vulnerable children/orphans. God answered Dolores and Todd's prayers. Kasese was not on the radar for planting a church there by the ICOC church in Kampala, Uganda. As we know, God sometimes works in mysterious and unexpected ways. In early March 2021, Martin and his wife Flavia visited the Kasese region for the family business and posted a picture on the church forum, "The Beauty of Kasese Hills." That ignited Richard Ahenda to share about Muhindo, whom he had been in contact with for nearly a year. Martin and Flavia visited Muhindo and some of the members of his church. These members, including Paul, had not studied repentance and baptism. In the months that followed, God orchestrated the American disciples and the Disciples in Uganda to provide funding, Bible studies, and training for a Mission team of ten Ugandan disciples to journey to Kasese. The group of disciples would study the Bible with Muhindo and Juliet and many others with open hearts hungry to learn the Word of God. Over the weekend of May 22nd and 23rd, 2021, five Kasesian men: Muhindo Paul, Venesiyo Bwambale, Silven Bwambale, Jairus Bwambale, Bright Kuule, and one Kasesian woman: Claudina Masika, repented and were baptized, making Jesus Lord of their lives. As of June 2021 sixteen, more souls are studying the Bible learning the Truth and seeking to become part of God's Kingdom.

Open, eager, earnest hearts continue to search for the Kingdom of God and His Truth. The Holy Spirit brought together men and women on two continents and different cities in the United States and Africa to answer prayers of faith and fulfill the desires of the hearts of those seeking Him. 2020 Campus Ministry Update - Nairobi, Kenya

God continues to move powerfully in the 'Ground Zero' Campus Ministry in Nairobi, Kenya!

Kevin and Eunice Oduor lead the campus ministry in Nairobi, Kenya. Despite the hardship of the global pandemic the campus ministry had 4 baptisms! The ministry came up with creative online activities and powerful devotionals. Everyone came up with creative ideas to make money and stay busy during the lockdown which helped them stay disciplined. The 63 students in the ministry are praying to God fervently for more souls to be saved!

The church also organized an “Extra-Mile” Donation drive to raise money for people affected by COVID-19. The campus ministry raised money by climbing a local mountain. It was a sacrificial and beautiful experience!

2020 News from Harare, Zimbabwe

Edwin & Christine Shumba lead the church in Zimbabwe and encouraged the church to focus on Psalm 46:10 during the pandemic. During this year miraculously they practiced being still with God and the church had their biggest growth in two years! They experienced the power of the love of God by adding 22 brothers and sisters to the church!

Many members were unemployed due to COVID-19 but the donations from churches around the world helped the church to pay for school fees, medical expenses, and food. The church pantry is stocked up fully to make sure no disciples in our churches will go without good. Their theme of God and Family in 2020 was thoroughly realized as our global community of churches gave financially and through prayer to aid the church in Zimbabwe.

Sharing the Gospel in one city impacts churches around the world!

Manny (Amanuel) Dandena was baptized in October of 2018 in the campus ministry in San Antonio, Texas. Since that time, he has become one of the most fruitful students in his campus ministry. In the past 9 months, he has helped 3 people to become disciples. He leads a Bible talk, serves as one of the officers in his student organization, and is the main liaison between the organization and the university. He is very responsible and is one of the brothers relied upon the most by his Campus Minister, Nick Ziegler.

From an academic standpoint, he excels as a math major in the honors college and gets exceptional grades. He currently has a 3.73 GPA. He pays his bills working as a math tutor for the university.

God has blessed Manny with many talents and abilities, and he has decided to use these talents to build up God’s Kingdom.

Elsh (Elshaday) Dandena was baptized in March of 2019 and is a vibrant part of the campus ministry in San Antonio. Both she and Manny have been an integral part of helping their parents to become disciples in Ethiopia.

Elsh is an outstanding student and has a 3.8 GPA.

Meseret (Manny & Elsh’s Mom) began noticing changes in her children after their baptisms in 2018 and 2019 in San Antonio, Texas. In December 2019, she had a mini-stroke, and she felt like God was trying to get her attention. In May of 2020, Meseret began studying the Bible while visiting her older daughter, who lives in Kentucky. She studied the Bible in her native Ethiopian language (Amharic) with Kibra (from Missouri), Meskerem (from Kansas), Tsega (from Virginia), and Addis (from London). It was apparent from the beginning that she was a woman who loves God and was determined to do whatever is necessary to be right with God. After studying the Bible with these 4 wonderful sisters and counting the cost with the women’s church leader in Ethiopia (Zoe), Meseret decided to make Jesus the Lord of her life. On June 28, 2020, she was baptized into Christ in the Cincinnati church building! Her baptism was attended on Zoom by disciples in Ethiopia, San Antonio, Cincinnati, Missouri, Kansas, London, and Germany. God was truly glorified on that day!

Meseret returned home to Ethiopia in August of 2020. Since her return, it has been amazing to see what God is doing through the impact of one changed life!

Meseret’s husband, Sori (Manny & Elsh’s Dad) studied the Bible with Berhanu (the church leader in Ethiopia) and Solomon. He was baptized on

December 27th.

Masresha and Tigist are dear friends of Meseret and Sori. They began studying the Bible, and were baptized - Masresha on October 31st, and his wife, Tigist on November 21st.

Meseret and Sori’s oldest son, Tenu is currently studying the Bible. His wife Tina, was baptized on December 6th.

Addis is the daughter of close friends of Meseret and Sori, and she lives with them. She began studying the Bible, and was baptized on December 20th.

So far, 5 people have decided to make Jesus the Lord of their lives since Meseret's baptism! Some several other friends and relatives are currently studying the Bible. Please keep them and the church in Ethiopia in your prayers.

Three other people were baptized last year in the church in Ethiopia (for which we praise God). That alone would have been a fantastic year for a church that began the Year 2020 with a membership in the '20s.

We thank God for Berhanu and Zoe, who are doing a stellar job leading this church, and we thank all of those who have served the church in Ethiopia over the years.

Last year has seen the most people brought to Christ in our sister congregation in Ethiopia in over 20 years. We want to take this opportunity to especially thank God for Dan Kuria, a courageous Kenyan leader who turned down the opportunity to pursue a Master's Degree in the U.S. to go into the full-time ministry in Kenya. He went into the full-time ministry in 1998. He was asked to move to Ethiopia from Kenya in 2000 to take over from the inspiring leadership of Steve & Carol Mukenya, who helped the church in Addis Ababa grow tremendously. Under Dan's leadership, the church continued to grow and flourish. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the passing of our dear brother Dan Kuria (April 18, 2001), who was shot and killed during an uprising in Addis Ababa while he and Hanna Woldeyes were on their way to visit one of the members of the church who was ill. In the month before he died, the church had 7 baptisms and 1 restoration.

One of the last people Dan studied the Bible with and helped become a Christian was Berhanu Wari, who was then a campus student and is now the leader of the church in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

We salute Dan Kuria's faith and love for God and the church in Ethiopia.

2020 Update in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe

David & Barbara Gondongwe lead the church in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Through the Holy Spirit in 2020 the church of 55 members baptized 11 individuals and 1 person was restored for a total of 68 members by the end of the year! The Gondongwe’s help lead 2 other small churches for a combined membership of 80 disciples by the end of 2020.

During the year the church was incredibly creative with how to share the gospel. Zoom was too expensive for many members, so resourcefully they began using WhatsApp to do bible studies via text message. Bible studies would go on for hours via WhatsApp message and the word of God was spread!

Many church members lost their sources of income due to the pandemic. The church is so grateful to contributions that started a food pantry and medical bills for disciples.

Kisumu & Mombasa, Kenya - Steve and Teryl Brand Serve and Teach in Kenya

The Steve and Teryl Brand family spent their Thanksgiving vacation visiting, serving, and teaching in Kenya

Steve & Teryl Brand, empty nesters from the North River Church of Christ in Atlanta, Georgia, have made it a tradition over the past four years to “give their Thanksgiving to Africa”. This year God put it on their hearts, along with their two adult children, to go to two of the smaller churches who have never had outside speakers from the States.

They served first in Kisumu, Kenya, 11/23-24/19, accompanied by Raymond & Lily Musonye from Nairobi. They taught classes on “Emotional and Spiritual Maturity”, “Building Trusting Relationships” and “Optimal Mental Health for Disciples”. Steve preached on “Faith, Risk and God Blessing Your Dreams”.

The following weekend, 11/29-12/1, they saw the sunrise on the east side of Kenya in Mombasa which is over 69% Muslim. They taught, counseled and preached to build up the church, accompanied by Samuel and Eunice Mbuva from Nairobi.

This was the first time either church was exposed to seasoned disciples from the States who gave their vacation time and Holiday to serve them in this way. For many of the children it was their first ever encounter with a Caucasian disciple, as they reached out to touch their skin and Teryl’s hair. “To God be the glory, great things HE has done!”

All of this was made possible by the generous contributions of other US disciples to their non-profit, FREE2THRIVE.org.

The Africa Missions Association (AMA) assisted by making introductions and so facilitating this encouraging visit.

Johannesburg, South Africa - Southern African Youth Camps

Youth Camp Helping Turn Things Around In Southern Africa

Our Southern Africa family of churches, which is comprised of 12 countries, have a passion to see the next generation of kids being trained and raised in the fear of God. One way in which we do this is by having camp annually for children between the ages of 9 and 17 years.

Having been trained by Camp Swamp CC from Atlanta GA, USA for three years, the 22 churches across Southern Africa have held Youth Camps since 2011. God has been gracious in helping us see our camp grow from one week of camp to two weeks of camp with each camp hosting 160 campers.

We have also seen our children understand and appreciate how big the Kingdom of God is, as well as see friendships being forged across cultures, races and countries as they have enjoyed each-other’s company during camp.

Because of distance, high travel costs to and from Camp, as well as the number of the children within our region, we saw the need to take the spirit of camp to other countries. Through the undying support of Camp Swamp CC and the generosity of the Columbia Church in 2015 we managed to start a three year Camp planting in Harare, Zimbabwe and this December 2018 by God’s grace we will be starting another camp planting in Maputo Mozambique.

Not only is the camp work spreading across Southern Africa we are also very grateful to God on how we are seeing souls being added to his kingdom across the region. An amazing story and example of this comes from our 22 member church in Madagascar whereby a few disciples in our fellowship of churches in the US and France sponsored two boys, Nico and Tien, from Madagascar in 2016.

Living in one of the poorest countries in the world, off the east coast of Africa, where about 70% of the population live below the poverty line; with the average ticket from Madagascar to South Africa costing $1200 and an additional $220 for camp it’s impossible for an average family to even think of sending a child to camp.

However for Nico (pictured second from right in the back row below) and Tien (pictured second from right in the front row below) their attendance was made possible through the generous donations of disciples overseas.

Their mere presence at Youth Camp 2016 was an inspiration for the whole church in Tana, who had felt forgotten for a long time. The Madagascar church receives visits from disciples from other churches about twice a year. Nico and Tien
returned home from camp and started studying the bible. In October, Nico and Tien’s brother Ambinina (second from left below, who is a university student) made Jesus the Lord of their lives, and Tien was baptised in November.

A year later two teen girls, Diana and Safi, were also privileged to attend Youth Camp 2017 in Johannesburg South Africa. We are again grateful to God for making it possible for them to attend camp.

God however helped reignite Diana’s father Bendere’s faith (pictured below). In January 2018, he was restored to the fellowship. Bendere was the first disciple to be baptised when the church was planted in 1999.

In addition in August 2018, Nico’s sister Tinah (in purple) was baptised; she’s a campus student. The Madagascar fellowship was recognised as a church in 1999 and a few years later, under the leadership of the late Wilner and his wife Chantal Cornerly, grew to around 80. Since the early 2000s the church has had no full-time staff and saw their number dwindle.

The camp visits however of these young people show that there is an eagerness from the young people in the church to
establish a relationship with God. It also shows us how one baptism can lead to a domino effect, and that a mustered seed faith goes a long way to resuscitate, inspire and encourage even a shrinking church.

The Madagascar story is just one of the many stories in which Camp is helping to inspire faith in our family of churches. At a cost of $220 per camper we understand that camp is not cheap and many of our children need help to make it to camp. In fact 40% of the children who attend camp are part sponsored or fully sponsored; and yet God has been faithful and continues to be faithful in helping us achieve milestones.

From having no camp 10 years ago to seeing a first camp of 204 campers in 2011, we have seen God making it possible for close to 500 campers attend camp in a year starting 2018. As recipients of these miracles we can only say thank you God. Thank you God for putting it on the hearts of our brothers and sisters in the US to raise money, come to our continent and teach us start Camp in Southern Africa. Thank you God for the generous givers who help in both small ways and big ways to contribute for our children to attend camp. Thank You, Thank You, Thank You God.

Great news happening in Antanarivo - Madagascar, Maputo - Mozambique, Gaborone - Botswana, Johannesburg - South Africa

There are about 12 countries in the Southern African region and there are over 21 churches. There were over 200 baptisms in our Southern African churches in 2017. The Mozambique church has increased from 80 disciples to 160 and are looking to go past 200 this year. The church in Gaborone, Botswana have appointed full time leaders.

The English-speaking West African churches are increasing in a great way, with 27 churches in 6 countries growing to over 3400 disciples. The churches are grateful for all the contributions and sacrifices made towards the growth of the churches. The highlights of 2017 was the ability to support the churches in Liberia and Sierra Leone. In Liberia there are about 400 disciples there and it was a great opportunity to be able to help them as they have withstood civil war and Ebola, but they are still devoted to Jesus Christ. The churches are thankful for your support.

Great news happening in Nairobi - Kenya, Sudan and Rwanda

The East African churches are very grateful for all the financial support. We have 15 churches in 6 countries and a membership of 2000 disciples. Last year there were 121 baptisms. The campus ministry had a Christian camp outing and during the camp, 4 students made the decision to be disciples of Jesus and got baptised. Great news from the churches in Abidjan and other French West African speaking churches

The Abidjan Christian Church is grateful to all the churches that have been helpful in supporting them financially. We have 32 churches in French West Africa and 4500 disciples. Last year God had increased our number with 632 baptisms. We need workers especially in the campus ministry.

Mike and Justin Renton sharing their conversion story

Justin Renton was a really talented and committed race car driver in South Africa, winning a number of regionals and two South African racing championships. When Justin got to University he was reached out to by Gary Knutson. But growing up in South African in the 1980's with the racial division, coming to church was refreshing to see everyone get along so well. Justin started prioritizing his Christian faith above motor racing. His father Mike was reluctant at first, but Justin's faith remained a strong example to him over many years. In the course of time, Mike started studying and got baptized at the age of 66. Mike is now a Deacon in the Cape Town Church of Christ and doing amazing things for God.

Great news happening in Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone

The English-speaking West African churches are increasing in a great way, with 28 churches in 6 countries growing to over 3800 disciples. In June, a new church was planted in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria. Three teachers were appointed to help teach the Bible in depth, along with the other evangelists, in many other African churches. The church leadership in Accra, Ghana has hired Francis and Paule Dasse from Abidjan to come help them lead the church in Accra. The first Youth and Family conference in Lagos was held this year and had an attendance of 1000 people from across West Africa. There are also a number of needs in the churches in Liberia and Sierria Leone.

Great news happening in Nairobi - Kenya, Sudan and Rwanda

The brothers and sisters in Nairobi, Kenya are as grateful as they are blessed to have a great Marrieds Retreat with an attendance of 170 couples, having couples come all the way from as far as Sudan. Also, they had an awesome attendance of 200 at the Teen and Pre-teen camp this year. The campers had loads of fun, they were safe, and learned about many spiritual things including the purity of heart that God wants us all to have. Fifteen Teenagers were baptized as a result of the camp.

Great news happening in Antanarivo - Madagascar, Maputo - Mozambique, Johannesburg - South Africa

The Madagascar church has experience encouraging growth, as there have been 6 baptisms, and the church has increased to 21. The Mozambique church too has increased from 80 disciples to 160. The South African Campus Ministry has had sixteen 16 baptisms and the church had an event they called their 1st century service. The harvest is plenty but the workers are few.

God is moving to renew the Accra Christian Church. The church has been searching for a new lead ministry couple for several months and have recently brought Francis and Paule Dasse from Abidjan, Ivory Coast to lead the church. On Sunday, September 30, Francis reported with joy that the brothers are on fire for God in Accra.

Accra's first annual Campus Training Program (CTP) was a huge success

For two weeks in June 2018, students from Lagos (Nigeria) and Atlanta (Georgia, US) joined with the disciples in Accra to pray, teach, fellowship, share and study the Bible to build up the Accra campus ministry.

The Accra campus ministry is growing in strength and numbers. Furthermore, the whole congregation has been built up by the energy that these young disciples bring.

The Accra campus ministry is led by Odun and Patricia Odulate.

Plenty of open air group Bible studies were had on campus, and many young men and women studied the Bible further in one-on-one settings. The experience was great for the disciples as well to learn from one another.

Cody and Kirstie Porter led a team of about 10 campus disciples from the North River Church of Christ in Atlanta, Georgia to take part in this program. They were greeted enthusiastically by our brothers and sisters in Accra at the airport.

The Accra Christian Church has been loving God and serving the people of Accra, Ghana for about 20 years. The congregation is eager to grow in many ways and is currently searching for a new full-time ministry couple to help lead the congregation.
